Meet our sweet little lady Betty Boop!! Poor Betty Boop and her brothers and sisters lost their home when their mom lost her home and had to move to low income apartments and would not let her bring her beloved dogs…so poor Betty Boop and family ended up at the Artesia Pound. She is a female, 9 month old old black lab. She gets along good with other dogs and has a very sweet dispostion. Marcus is an 18 month old black lab found wandering in Clovis by Canon Air Force base.  A wonderful family took him in to save him the trauma and danger of the local shelter.  He is in Albuquerque in boarding … we just need to find him a home!  Marcus is almost completely black with just the smallest sliver of white going down the center of his chest. He is a smart boy, and is starting to obey basic commands. Maimee is a beautiful 8 year old black lab female.  She is a wonderful girl that is house trained, crate trained, and a sweetheart.  Maimee integrates great with other dogs.  She rides in the car perfectly, and walks great on a leash.  She is so loving and happy, despite the past neglect she suffered.  She is in Albuquerque and doing wonderful in her foster home with her foster’s 4 other labs, she even likes getting her toes wet in the pool!  She is a quiet, obedient, mellow girl who likes short walks, and just hanging out on the couch!  She is a very sweet girl just waiting to give love and to find her forever home!  For more information on Maimee please call 505/362-0331.

Seal and  Nestle are two 10 year old Lab mixes who wandered on to a ranch in the Santa Fe area a number of years ago. Life was good until the economy wasn’t. The ranch was sold and the owner couldn’t take his 4 legged ranch hands with him and their humans are their reason for living. A sad, but too often repeated, story!

Seal, male, 65 pounds, black, (except for the  distinguished gray muzzle)

Nestle, female (Seal’s sister) 65 pounds, chocolate.(except for the distinguished gray muzzle).  She has arthritis in her left front leg so she, as is Seal, are on Glucosamine.

When ever we spend time with dogs we attempt to develop a list of pros and cons:

PROS
Walk with or without a leash
Do not bark
Do not jump
Do not dig any more than any other dog.
Do not run out of gates unless you say, “come.”
Housebroken
Get along with other dogs, kids, not sure about cats
Ride OK  in cars
Will sleep in a dog house
No food aggression

CONS
They make it hard for you to garden on your knees because they will lick your face.

9/3/10 UPDATE FROM FOSTER

BEFUDDLED

“Over the years we did Lab rescue at the LODESTAR Dog Ranch we would occasionally have a great  Lab available for adoption which unexplainably seemed invisible to the adopting public.

We are now out of the day- to-day operation of the rescue and have agreed to take on two dogs as foster and here we are again!!

Folks we have had Seal and Nestle here with us since early June. That is much too long for good dogs like this to not have a home.

Yes, they are about 10 years old which means they will only live another 2 to 4 years.  Yes, they are seniors so they will be more costly, in money and emotion, than a younger dog.

BUT

How much is it worth to have 2-4 years of looking into eyes so excited to see you come in the door. Two to four years of hearing those tails thumping against what ever is near when you smile. Two to four years of  wiggly tummy rubs.

How much is 2-4 years of love worth?

If you are lonely, walking around the house talking to yourself and would like to have a reason to get up in the morning Seal and Nestle may be just what you need, I know you are just what they need.

from Fergie’s foster mama …  ”I met Fergie end of June at an Adoptathon, she was going to be taken back to her shelter and pts, so another rescue offered to take her and I have been keeping an eye on her until now.  When I saw that she was not doing well without personal love and attention, I brought her home to foster.  Fergie is a beautiful lab mix about 1-1/2 years old.  She is quite a bit under weight as she just did’t seem really interested in food, definitely not the lab in her.  She very dainty, but loves to run and play. She will sit on command and loves playing with other dogs, in water and snuggling up to you at night.  Right now I am working on my computer and she is curled up beside me on the floor.  We are working on feeding her whenever we can and she does.  Maybe just the love and home life makes her more hungry.  She has a beautiful black coat with a few small white markings. Kylie Starr, formerly Porkskin on our site is rescued and now a happy girl in foster in the ABQ area. Kylie Starr is a  spayed female, black Lab/Border Collie mix. She is about 2 years old. and has been waiting for her forever home for months! From her foster mama … “She is good with other dogs, very excitable, knows how to sit and stay. She needs a taller fence.  She is not scared by noises, the fireworks are not fazing her. Kylie does not chew or dig and she LOVES the water. She needs work on a leash. She is learning how to walk on a leash now. rides well in a car. loves belly rubs and knows how to sit.”  Kylee is currently in boarding, poor girl, and needs to find her home.

Penny Lane is a young lab found wandering in Albuquerque without id or microchip.  The wonderful folks who found her are now fostering her while we try to find her forever home.  Penny Lane foster mom has this to say about her.  ”"She  is  is the happiest dog who wants nothing more than to be with her people. She is very smart. She has gone from not knowing how to walk on a leash to walking right by your side. She is learning all of her cues, such as sit, leave it and off. I believe that she would be fine in a home with another dog as she has been great with my 2 dogs. She is curious about my parrot but has not made any attempts to “get” the parrot. As for cats, she is still VERY excited around my cat.  I am not sure yet of her intentions with the cat but yesterday was the first time that we really attempted to introduce them. So…I will continue to work with her and update you on her situation with cats. My husband seems to think that she would fine with “ dog saavy” cat. I am not sure how she will be with kids, but during our many walks she has seen kids and been excited but not overly excited.  I will try to get one of my friends with kids to come over to see how she reacts and will update you accordingly.  She is super friendly so I can’t imagine that she would have issue with kids, but she would probably do best with older kids as she is pretty excitable and is a larger girl.”  For more information on Penny Lane please call 505/362-0331.

Update  Penny is settling into her new surroundings and her personality is really coming out! She is the BIGGEST cuddle bug I have ever met. She really wants nothing more than to curl up with her people! She loves a long walk and is learning to “carry her own toys and water” She will be an excellent running partner and a great dog to take on long hikes and camping!  She is great friends with her foster dogs, especially our Ridgeback. They are walking buddies! We have learned that Penny likes kids! She will make a fantastic addition to a family!

Update … “Penny was a bit under the weather following her surgery but has bounced back beautifully is feeling great! She has recently started playing with her furry foster siblings toys which she had not done in the past! We are still working with her on her reaction to our cat!”
