Jake was rescued from the shelter in the nick of time. He is very handsome, a bit on the skinny side but ready for regular meals and is as sweet as pie.  His transporter reports he rode well in the car. Jake is a one year old black Lab currently in boarding in Albuquerque waiting for someone to take him home to foster or adopt.  He’s been waiting a really long time for his foster/forever home … His first gift for this holiday was saving his life.  Can you help him have his second gift of a caring home with love and food and hugs and kisses?  Please phone 505/362-0331 for information on fostering or adopting this deserving, lovely Jake.

Levi is a 3 year old yellow lab looking for a new home. He is currently at the Roswell NM Humane Society and would love to get out of there and into a home of his own. The shelter tells us he weighs about 78 pounds and he thinks he’s a lap dog when you sit down, however, he makes no attempt to jump up on you when you’re standing. Sounds like someone loved him and worked with him in his short life. Let’s hope we can find a new family that will love him and give him the forever home he so deserves. Please call the shelter at 575) 622-8950 and ask about Levi for more information.

Reno is a purebred, 4 year old chocolate Labrador Retriever coming up to Albuquerque tomorrow, 2/4, from Carlsbad because he was out of time at the shelter. He and Sheila are in desperate need of foster homes when they get here. We couldn’t take one and not the other, so now we’re hoping someone out there will see them and want to help us by fostering one of these beautiful dogs. Or better yet, maybe you’d like to make one of them a permanent family member. Please give us a call if you’re interested in fostering or adopting at 505) 362-0331.

We need a foster home for this girl ASAP. The shelter tells us she’s a sweet heart, loves squeeky toys (good girl), and imagines herself to be a lap dog. Please give us a call at 505) 362-0331 if you can help us by fostering this beauty, or better yet, if you’d like to make her a permanent member of your family.

Introducing Gracie, a sweet 1-2 year old female dark brown Lab mix. She is a wonderful girl who loves people and gets along well with all other dogs. She is not aggressive at all – with other dogs, or with food or toys. She is very smart, is learning commands (she now knows sit), is house trained, and is responding well to crate training and cat familiarization. Cats seemed to be previously unknown to her. She is doing great in foster and has really relaxed She also starting to put on some much needed weight. She is just so grateful to have a chance to be safe and happy. She loves toys and enjoys chewing on bones. She is a very sweet girl and is just a joy to have around.  If you can help Gracie please call (505) 362-0331

So, you’d like the perfect dog…

Rescue dogs come with baggage, but baggage can be a good thing if the baggage will hold all you want. Will any dog be the perfect dog? Will any dog’s human be the perfect dog’s human? The only dog that most of us have had that was even close to perfect was the one over which we are still grieving.

What do you want from your new dog? What do you NOT want from your new dog? To even begin your quest for the perfect dog you must answer those questions.

I once spoke to a woman who had a dachshund. She told me her neighbor asked her to go for a brisk walk with her and her dog—a three year old Labrador Retriever. (If only You Tube was around then.) Brisk walks with a short-legged, ground sniffer may expose a gap between what you want and what you’re not getting.

Dogs are bred for certain activities. The closer the activities you engage in are to the reason the dog was bred, the closer to perfect your dog will be. Don’t expect the dog to change its instincts to match your activities. Humans are supposed to be the smart ones. We may have to pick our battles and adjust our activities to match our dog’s personality in order to close in on perfection.

When you get your semi-perfect rescue dog home, and he exhibits less than ideal behavior, you can either train Rover out of the imperfection, or “manage around” the deficiency.

Let’s say you have a dog who gets agitated when you stick your hand in his food. Don’t stick you hand in his food! A person can live a perfectly fulfilled life with out having one’s hand stuck in dog food. If you feel you must feel up his food in order to show you’re the team leader, and the dog says, “no,” in your world, you do not have a perfect dog. (and possible one less finger). If you accept his little puppy peccadillo and keep your hands out of his food, you have a perfect dog. Congratulations.

A dog is a dog, and she is what she is. You are considering adopting a rescued Lab, warts and all. Learn all you can about the breed and about the Lab you are considering, and when you decide to take one of God’s most perfect creatures into your life, show her you’re up to the distinct privilege and challenge of being a “perfect” Lab’s human.

From his foster mom: What a sweet dog Charlie is. Rides like a champ in the car. Loves people and dogs. Walks very well on a leash. Loves having his head scratched and is a total lap dog. He’s a tall boy, about 80 pounds, with long legs, big feet and a huge head. He needs to put some weight on though, he’s a bit on the thin side. He seems to have no food aggression at all, as a matter of fact, he likes to take a break during eating, walk over for a hug, and then go back to his dish. Or he just lays down in front of his dish and eats. This guy has lots of personality. He chases the tennis ball but he isn’t allowed to have it so I’m not sure if he will bring it back (I have a tennis ball hog in my house). He seems to know sit and shake already, but he does get nervous if you move your hand over his head too quickly so I suspect his previous owners weren’t too kind to him. He wants nothing more than to be close to his human and he bonds very quickly. He knew exactly what the dog door was, so he was probably let inside the house at one time. He’s curious about my other dogs, but submissive to the pack leader. And his coloring is striking. Charlie is going to make some family a wonderful dog.

Introducing Charles, a male chocolate lab who we believe to be about 7-8 years old.  He was described by the shelter staff as a good boy and very sweet.  He is quite the handsome pup with very distinguished markings.  He is great with other dogs, but he needs a house without cats. Charles would like nothing better than to have a forever home to call his own.  If you can give him that home call (505) 362-0331.

Am I handsome or what?

Meet our lovely boy GABRIEL, a 1-1/2 year old black male labrador retriever who is the sweetest pup ever.  Gabe had been seen hanging out by the railroad tracks for over a month before he ended up at the Clovis Animal Shelter.  Thanks to Dion, he was rescued and became a member of the Luvin Labs family.  Gabe had a problem with his left rear leg which required the good folks at Good Shepherd Animal Clinic to perform FHO surgery on him.  He is now recovering and after only a week he is starting to put weight on that leg.  The recovery period is approximately 8 weeks and, with exercise combined with a lot of love and attention, he should be completely healed by that time.  Gabe is very gentle and loves other dogs and children.  He walks well on a leash and is house trained.  The more time we spend with Gabe, the more awesome we think he is.  Now to find that perfect home for him.  If you are interested in meeting him please call (505) 362.0331.

Meet Harlan!!  He’s  a one year old male yellow mostly lab boy!

1/18/2012 Update from his foster mom:  He knows his name – listens well – and will come running when called.  I have taught him the SIT command…and we are working on heeling.  He is house trained, friendly, loves people and other dogs, has no food aggression, loves to play, craves affection and always wants to be at my side.  Harlan takes correction and instructions extremely well from me – just wants love, approval and affection.  Does take corrections from Sammy and Balto (his foster lab brothers) and has even been snapped at by Balto with no response except for backing off.  Much improved as far as jumping up on me, but is extremely mobile.  Is doing better with the cat – just curious.  Has really beautiful eyes – pictures don’t do him justice!  He truly has the potential to be a great family dog (or anything else that you train him to be).

If you are interested in Harlan call 505/362-0331.

Sweet GIGI is a gorgeous, chocolate Labrador Retriever (who looks to be pure bred), that was surrendered to the Farmington shelter with her pups when her owner lost his job.  Notes from her past owner say she is a great girl and really deserves a loving home; we totally agree.

Update from GIGI:  If you’re reading about me and looking at my stunning photos, my name’s GIGI and I am around 2 to 3 years old.  I’m medium in size (just over 60 pounds), with the silkiest coat and ears……perfect for a lab lover, who is seeking a lab that’s not super-sized.  I have the sweetest, most gentle soul, and will stare into your eyes with trust and hope, just as I am in my picture (see how pretty I am?).  I love being around people, both young and old, other dogs and even cats.  I’m not food aggressive, and I don’t mind dining with other pups.  I’m still learning about the whole crate thing…….I know it’s supposed to be my safe den, so I need a little work with that.  My favorite spot is a doggie bed at night by your bed and I promise not to snore too loud.  I’m very good on a leash and love to ride in the car or a truck.  Although I’ve only been rescued recently, I’ve already heard from these great folks that I have so much potential and just need a loving family to help me blossom.  In a nut shell, if you’re looking for a beautiful, chocolate girl, who wants nothing more than to be a loyal companion and part of your family, than scroll down no further, and call to meet me at 505/362-0331.

Best News!!

Tsunami was lost on November 23 when an intruder broke into her families home and her and her little sister were let out. Little sister was found shortly after but Tsunami has been missing without a trace. Yesterday I received an email from another rescue alerting us to a craigslist posting that Dee wrote saying she’d been feeding a dog outside her apartment complex every morning when she cried. Wes (Tsunami’s dad) and Marita and Coral went out looking last night and decided to try again in the morning. Tsunami’s mom and dad, Coral and Jenn were out all day trying to track her down. Tsunami finally cornered herself in a place by the apartment building where she was caught, taken to Good Shepherd for a checkup (poor girl has lost over 40 pounds), microchipped and sent home with her loving family. We’ll keep you posted as she tries to put on weight (she’s only 43 pounds) and integrate back into her wonderful home.

Special thanks to Coral, Jenn, Alexa, Marita, Libby, Cody, Cindy, Joyce, Angela, Gail and the staff at Good Shepherd.

Hello my name is Brandi. I’m a mature 8 year old chocolate lab. I have spent the last year in a foster home with a real loving family. When I first moved in I did not realize I was a prime candidate for the TV show “The Biggest Loser”.  As hard as it was for me to realize how big I had gotten, it was even harder to go from 120 pounds down to my present weight of 80 lbs. Now that I’m thinner and feeling better. I’m ready to find a forever home. My forever home will be one where my maturity can be appreciated. My foster introduces me as the perfect dog. I get along with all dogs and I love people. I do not bark, jump up on anyone, lick, counter surf (except for popcorn, my favorite treat), I do not chew, I have no food aggression, I’m good on a leash, and I like to walk (my pace is slow but steady), I’m house broken, etc etc. But I’m not perfect, I do have a thyroid condition that requires daily medication, and I have a history of seizures (it has been a while since I have had an episode). If you’re looking for a dog that is always present but never needs to be the center of attention we should meet. For more information on me . . . that’s Brandi . . . please call 505/362-0331.

Lily is a six month old mostly lab mix who has had a rough start to her life .  She had a home, was hit by a car, and taken to a vet.  Her owner couldn’t afford the surgery, so her friend paid for the surgery. When Lily was healed and ready to go home, her family decided they didn’t want her so she came to us.  Lily needs another surgery to remove the pin in her leg, and then after recouping at her loving foster home, she’ll be ready for her real forever home.  For more information on sweet Lily please call 505/362-0331.  2/28/11 update from Lily’s foster dad … “Lily  is very sweet and loves to be held and praised.  She loves playing with toys and gets along well with her foster siblings.  She loves to play and would do well with another playful dog. Lilly can jump a four foot wall with no effort, however, she does not jump the wall with the intent of escaping and/or running, she is simply curious about the dogs next door.  Lilly is not allowed to sleep on her foster human’s bed, so she willingly cuddles with her foster brother Chuy.  Because her other foster siblings are allowed on the couch, she will sometimes join them.  However, she is a fast learner and this behavior can be changed quite easily.”

Adele is a sweet little black lab pup no older than 10 months old weighing only 35 pounds pulled out of theValencia animal shelter and now in foster with Luvin’ Labs.  Her foster mom tells us she is running and playing with the other dogs, playing with dog toys, and taking naps with the other dogs and cats.  She is a very quick learner; already knows the word outside, kennel, and working on the word potty.  She is crate and house trained.  She is very affectionate and loving, loves her belly rubbed and likes to roll in the dirt.  Adele just loves Astro, her foster sister.  They play constantly and she always has to sleep on her. If Astro is laying down, Adele will literally just go sit on her and go to sleep. She likes cats too and follows them around but doesn’t chase them. Her favorite toys are a nylabone and rope toy.  Overall, just a very sweet little girl!  Please give us a call at 505) 362-0331 if you’d like more information on Adele.

When we heard of Bubbles, here’s the story we heard … Bubbles owner has gone into a nursing home. Her owner’s son and a neighbor have been caring for her as best as they can, but now the son has been hospitalized down in Albuquerque. The neighbor has been doing the best he can to care for her alone but he’s afraid he can’t do it all alone and he can’t take her in because he has too many dogs of his own, so Bubbles (at 9 years old) was left on a chain, with a dog house, waiting for winter.

Bubbles is just the sweetest girl.  She has had a hard year but she is adapting to family life once again.   She gets along with children and other dogs, the older the better.  She loves going on walks and chewing on her bone.  She’s very quiet and doesn’t mind being outside for short periods of time, however, she loves to lay on her bed and have her belly rubbed.  I had the chance to meet her … She is SWEET!! She is BIG  : ) Bubbles needs a bit of a diet to find that svelte figure most 9 year old labs are looking for.  I took my oldest son who is 6’3″ and makes some dogs nervous cause of his size. I left her with him to get a new collar for her (cut out and threw out that dang old chained collar) and came back and she was sitting with her front half in his lap. Bubbles knows how to shake paws and loves to lie by you. Did I tell you she’s sweet??? Please give Bubbles the second chance at a loving home.  She really deserves it.

Haley is safe and in foster. The shelter told us she’s about 7 years old and she’s on the smaller side, maybe 50 or so pounds. And what a sweet girl she is. Slept the whole way in the car. She’s laying at my feet right now. She fit in immediately with the rest of my pack. She has some gray on her face, feet and rear end, which is just adorable. We’re learning the basics like sit, no, how to use the dog door, no jumping. I don’t think anyone gave this girl much attention. She is so eager to please and do the right thing. And she is so happy. She smiles and her tail never stops wagging. As I get to know her over the next few days, I’ll write more about this sweet girls personality. Joey is a beautiful golden colored Labrador Retriever Puppy found playing at a school in Los Lunas. from Joey’s foster mama … “Joey has been with us for 5 days now and is settling in.  He is a super affectionate boy who needs a little extra reassurance that life is going down a good road now and the hard stuff is behind him.  His leg is in a splint and has to be exercised and the splint and dressing changed twice a day.  He had to be soft muzzled the first several times but has gotten to trust us enough that it isn’t necessary to muzzle him anymore.  My husband holds him up against his chest while I stretch and work his leg and re-wrap it.  He rests his head against his chest and closes his eyes and just rolls with it.  It usually wears him out pretty good and he is ready for a nap when we’re done.  Joey gets along well with my 3 other dogs and 3 cats but is a little too interested in the cats sometimes.  He has a long road ahead of him recovering from the trauma to his leg but we are cautiously  optimistic that with the right therapy and enough time he will have the use of his leg again.  He is a beautiful boy and a total sweetheart! He is microchipped, heartworm negative and utd on vaccines.  He will be neutered once his leg is strong enough for him to deal with the recovery.” For more information on Joey please call 505/362-0331. Joey will remain in foster until he has made positive progress with his leg.

Lab Facts…

Activity Requirements

Labrador Retrievers have energy to spare and are not well suited for couch potatoes. They are also rather large and clumsy, so apartments are not the best living arrangements for this breed. Homes with yards and lots of room to romp are the most ideal setting to raise a Lab.

Walking a Lab is a good start for daily exercise, but a simple stroll around the block is not going to fulfill their daily exercise requirement.  These dogs need to run every day in order to burn off excess energy, and if they aren’t properly exercised they will become destructive. A bored Lab will chew anything he can get his mouth on. Labs are thrilled to accompany you on jogs or to run alongside a bicycle. Playing in the yard with children can keep them busy for hours on end. Hunters can take Labs out into the field to retrieve, and they can handle icy water temperatures with ease.

Swimming pool owners be warned: you’ll have a hard time getting your Labrador out of the water. If the pool is open, he’ll want to swim.

BAGGAGE

(by Evelyn Colbath, ©1995 Baggage, All Rights Reserved]

Now that I’m all home, bathed, settled and fed,

All nicely tucked in my warm new bed,

I’d like to open my baggage lest I forget,

There is so much to carry, so much to regret.

Hmmmmm, Yes, there it is right on the top,

Let’s unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss,

And there by my leash hides Fear and Shame,

As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave,

I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain.

I loved them, the others, the ones who left me,

But I wasn’t good enough; for they didn’t want me.

Will you add to my baggage? Will you help me unpack?

Or will you just look at my things and take me right back?

Do you have the time to help me unpack?

To put away my baggage,

To never repack?

I pray that you do; I’m so tired, you see.

But I do come with baggage; will you still want me?

Montana is a 9-10 year old wonderful girl.  She has had a hard life with lots of neglect and mistreatment.  Montana was recently spayed and had some mammary tumors removed.  She still has some tumors remaining which will probably have to be removed in the future.  Montana has the sweetest disposition and is such a loving girl.  She wants to be with people and other dogs all the time.  Montana does not bark and has never been aggressive with food, other dogs, cats or people.  She is an absolute angel!  She uses the doggie door and has never had an accident in the house.  Montana has some arthritis and needs to be an indoor dog with a warm bed and other pets.  Her pack mate, Dakota passed away at the shelter after they were dumped by their former owners.  Thank goodness Luvin Labs stepped in and saved this wonderful girl.  She deserves to spent the rest of her life being spoiled and loved.  If you would like to meet Montana please call 505-362-0331.

Meet beautiful Fionn who was waiting so patiently in the Garland Shelter for his family to come for him. They never did. What was coming for him was the end of his young life.  Barely a year old, gorgeous with light eyes and blonde eyelashes, sweet Fionn was going to be put to sleep. Luvin’ Labs Fionn, our celtic fair haired namesake, is just waiting for his forever family to find him. Perhaps that’s you, and you can love him forever, or maybe you are just going to be one of a few angels who will help us by adopting. Fionn does great with playing with other dogs, will be close to a niney pounder when we get some weight back on him and is absolutely striking!  He is a very quiet calm guy in boarding but loves to go for walks and get lots of loving.  He walks well and loves kids.  Don’t miss Fionn … he is very special boy. Please call us at 505/362-0331 if you can help sweet Fionn.

Fionn Kissing Page, of Page and Sheila goodbye, thanks for helping on our ride to our new home Page!

Princess is now safe and in foster. Here’s what her foster mom has to say about her: Princess is such a sweet girl. She’s doing well with all the other dogs and has made herself right at home. She walks good on a leash and even plays outside with my other dogs, although she doesn’t care for it when they jump all over her. She’s on the smaller side, around 60 pounds, and somewhere along the line she had her tail docked. That doesn’t slow down all the wagging she does with it though. She’s a happy girl and a total snuggle bug. She uses the dog door with no problem and sits with all the other dogs for her treats, which she takes like a little lady. I suspect she was kept as an outside only dog due to the fact that she was hesitant at first to come inside the house. She’s an older girl, maybe around 9, but she still has a lot of love to give the right forever family. She gives sweet little kisses, snores and snorts when she’s happy, and makes the funniest faces that just crack me up. Please give us a call at 505) 362-0331 if you’d like to meet her.

Bella is an adorable, 1 - 1 1/2 year old beautiful, petite, very rare silver female lab.  She is very sweet and loving, loves to retrieve and cuddle with her human and is anxious to please.  She loves toys, is comforted by carrying them in her mouth, especially soft little toys.  She’s energetic and loves running around with toys…did we say she loves toys!   She appears very shy at first meeting, but adapts very quickly.  Bella is a quick learner, does well on a leash, has had no accidents in the house and does well with other dogs.  She is a sweetheart and will make someone a wonderful family member.  Bella is looking for a new home that is somewhat quiet with someone that will give her the love and attention she deserves.  If that could be you call (505) 362-0331 for more information about Bella.

Ozzy needs a new home.  We thought he was a purebred, but it turns out he has a bit of something else in him which explains a few brownish spots and a cute curly tail.  He is about 7 months old and sweet. From his current owner: Ozzy is an energetic and friendly dog.  He gets along well with other animals and is good with kids.  He loves attention and is VERY playful.  He has such a cute personality.  He reaches his paw out to interact and will jump around hoping for some attention and play. Ozzy is a good guard dog.  He alerts us to the presence of people at our home. Since Ozzy is still a puppy, he will need a family that can give him the attention and exercise that all young labs need. If you’d like to meet him, please give us a call at 505) 362-0331.

How cute is this??

Meet Miss Daisy, a svelte 50 lb petite girl about 4 years old.  She might be on the small side, but is perfect in so many ways.  She gets along well with other dogs, walks well on a leash, sits perfectly, will cuddle at your side or on your lap (your choice), plays fetch with great delight returning the ball to you, uses the doggie door like a pro, and will sleep on a pillow by your bed without a fuss.  She is definitely a “people dog” and could do well as an only dog if her owners were home a lot.  As is the case with people, sometimes life throws you a curve ball, and in Daisy’s case, she has been diagnosed with diabetes.  The good news is that with a high protein dog food and two insulin shots a day, she is about the best dog around.  She would do well in a home with people who have a routine and  who can be sure she gets her insulin on time. For more information on little Daisy, please give us a call at 505) 362-0331.

ASPCA Blog – Cruelty Alert: Dogs in Pickup Trucks

December 30, 2011
posted by Jonie @ 7:52 pm

A few years ago, Julien Roohani of Portland, Oregon, was at work when her roommates spontaneously decided to go on a hike. Not wanting to exclude Julien’s six-month-old Shepherd/Border Collie mix, Niña, they threw her into the back of their pickup truck and set off for an adventure.
Niña had never been in a truck bed before. Whether she was scared or just spotted something of interest, she managed to jump out during the drive. Panicking, the roommates called Julien, who rushed Niña to an emergency veterinary clinic where she was diagnosed with a broken spine and other severe injuries. Julien had no choice but to allow her young pup to be humanely euthanized.
Unfortunately, stories like Niña’s are all too common. It is never safe to drive with an unrestrained pet—especially with that pet in an open truck bed.
“When you drive with a loose dog in the back of your truck, you’re taking a huge risk and placing your dog and other motorists in danger,” says Chuck Mai, a vice president with AAA Oklahoma. “Even if a dog is trained, we’re talking about an animal who responds to stimuli on impulse. This irresponsible decision can start a deadly chain reaction on the road.”
Is It Legal?
Transporting unrestrained dogs in low-sided truck beds has been banned in a handful of states, including California and New Hampshire, and municipalities including Indianapolis, Cheyenne and Miami-Dade. However, in the vast majority of jurisdictions, it’s not even illegal to transport children in this manner, so we must rely on common sense and education to protect children and pets alike.
How You Can Help
One can feel terribly helpless witnessing a loose dog in a pickup truck. The best course of action is to try to get the vehicle’s license number (if you can do so while remaining safe) and call the local police. Rather than dialing 911, Jill Buckley, ASPCA Senior Director of Government Relations, suggests storing your police precinct’s phone number in your cell phone.

Happy Holidays!

Tank & Duke

posted by joanabq @ 10:19 pm

Meet Tank and Duke, 2 beautiful black lab siblings found running along a highway near Loving, NM. They are about 1 year old and very loving and protective of each other.

Tank is a sweetheart of a giant who seems to love all other animals…dogs, cats, birds, etc.  He will need someone who can provide some extra TLC; it appears he must have been abused by a man when he was young as he is cautious when men are present and will run and hide. He has overcome this in recent weeks in his foster home with the husband living there.

Duke is smaller than Tank and extremely smart.  He also appears to have been abused, but not to the extent that Tank was.  Duke has taken less time to adjust to his foster family and is very happy in his new environment.   Like his brother Tank, Duke also has a special affection for other animals (see photo below) and feels very safe around them.

It would be wonderful if these 2 brothers could be fostered or adopted together, but they also could function quite well apart.  If you are interested in giving both or one of these boys a loving and secure home, please contact Darya at (575) 200-8536 or email doggolfer7@yahoo.com

Luvin’ Labs folks, please meet Coral Rickett … friend, Luvin’ Labs adopter, healer …

“Massage helps animals to concentrate and to relax and just like human beings, massage feels good.

A great benefit of animal massage is to increase the effectiveness and strength of the immune system.  Chemicals called cytokines are released during a massage and these help to reduce stress hormones.

- Massages improve blood and lymph circulation
- Massages can relieve muscle tension
- Massages can help an animal to recover quicker from injury
- Animals can de-stress with a massage… just like people can
- A massage can help to rebalance energy and provide comfort
- Massages can enhance the bond between animals and humans
- Massaging an animal can increase the function of the immune system

For animals who are pre-mature or who have been separated from their Mother too early, massage helps to socialize and can substitute for the nurturing they didn’t get from their Mother.

For senior animals, massage can be a comfort and can help to ease the pains that come from aging.

For animals that are passing from this life, massage can be a comfort and a reassurance that they are not alone. No one, not even animals should die alone and massage helps to integrate sort of a hospice situation for animals in their time of need and transition.

As a therapist, I am passionate about animals and I work for the animals. I am happy to be present during euthanasia and consider that to be a specialized service that I offer.

I work with rescues and vets and the humane society to give animals peace, comfort and joy and to give back some of the love and affection that they have given to me throughout my life.”

Candie is a sweetheart…very loving, beautiful and just about one year old.  She is now safe in Texas and has fully recovered from a range of things including intestinal parasites, upper respiratory infection and an intestinal bug.   She is waiting for a foster in ABQ or her forever home to make the long trek up here!  We would love to help her find her forever home before the holidays! Please let us know if you’d like to help us with a 10 month old bundle of love!  If interested please call 505-362-0331.

Update from Candie‘s foster mom in Texas:  Candy-O, with her 2 favorite things in the whole world. She really doesn’t want to go anywhere, or do anything without her Rabbit baby and her Shin Bone.  The bone is called that for 2 reasons:  1. It’s just about the size of a human shin bone.  2. With her size, when she runs with it, that’s right where she’ll hit you with it…And OMG…it HURTS!

She is the most loving and love needy Lab I’ve ever seen. She is so loyal. She’s going to make someone soooo happy to have a sweet girl like her. I can’t even begin to tell you what a good girl she is…She’s the perfect family dog.   I hope she gets the best home ever!!!!!  I love this girl.

We named Hero because of who he was. Despite the pain, hunger and misery he must of been in while wandering as a stray he was observed every day walking kiddos to the school bus stop and then waiting there to walk them home at the end of the day. Hero, despite two surgeries and so much love and support from all of us, passed away on October 5, 2011. Hero, you were a gentle loving soul who at only a year old had a horrible life. I hope in the end you left knowing how deeply you were loved and what a profound impression you left on many of our lives.

We have established Hero’s Fund, to raise funds and help in our ability to rescue black dogs in shelters. Black Dog Syndrome affects the lives of countless wonderful dogs in shelters throughout this country. Donated funds will be used to rescue and rehabilitate black Labrador Retrievers.

A Rescued Dogs Prayer

Thank you for rescuing me … I know you’ve thought long and hard about a new friend
Something about my soulful eyes and soft fur touched a very special part of you.
I wanted to share with you a bit of me,
and what might help me to be the best pup for you.
Up until a few weeks ago I had the perfect dog life,
and then one day, a day like every other,
Ended with me being abandoned.
I’ve been at the shelter, on the end of a chain,
In a field, or sitting on the side of the road
Waiting, scared, moved from place to place
With no idea of who to trust or what is going to happen.
Thankful for the fresh water, food, a warm place to sleep and sometimes kind people.
And then you chose me …
Please give me time to adjust to you and to learn your expectations of me.
All I want is to please you, I just do not know how to yet.
I ask you to please give me patience and understanding.
I don’t yet know what you want of me.
Teach me softly, consistently,
Outside, down, fetch, sit, good dog!
If you don’t understand my behavior,
It may be because I have been abused, abandoned, neglected.
Sometimes I may be afraid of you, of other people, of loud noises or sudden movements.
Time and patience will help me learn to trust again.
Please forgive me if I am protective of my food.
I was so very hungry for a very long time.
Someday I’ll understand that my food bowl will never again be empty.
Adopt me because you want me,
Because under my faults and flaws you see who I really am,
You understand that each of us is not perfect,
That our imperfections actually show our individual beauty.
And last but not least, please give me the precious time
I need to adjust to your house, to your home, to you.
I will bond to you … be it today, or tomorrow … or next week
And I promise with all that I am that I will be
Your most loyal, loving, forever friend.

Pictures are of Sir Lancelot, a 3 year old yellow Labrador Retriever rescued from the Garland, Texas shelter by many rescues working together.  He was an owner surrender who knows sit, shake, and lie down and was just left there, and rescued hours before being put to sleep.  The “Sad Lab” picture at the top of post circulated all over the internet waiting for a rescue to commit to him.  The “Happy Lab” picture at the bottom was after he was rescued, and safe, in boarding.  We are happy to say that Sir Lancelot is living his happily ever after with his new family in Albuquerque, NM!

Following are postings for dogs in immediate danger in shelters throughout New Mexico, and Texas, as well as courtesy listings for other shelters and owners looking for homes for their labs. Shelter staff named her ONYX and she is a spayed female, black and white Labrador Retriever mix. Our volunteer tells us she is easy to walk, mild mannered and would make a good family dog.  She walks nicely on leash and settles for a good petting.  She does not have lab ears so doesn’t look very labby, but what lab she has in her shows in her personality.  She has been at the shelter since December 24, 2011 and available for adoption since Jan 04, 2012. The shelter thinks she is about 6 years old. Please call Albuquerque Animal Services – Eastside at 505) 768-1975 and ask about animal id A0884488 for more information.

My name is BAILEY and I am a neutered male, tan Labrador Retriever and Chinese Sharpei, however, to us, he looks like a typical squishy faced Lab, not Sharpei.  The shelter thinks I am about 6 years old.  I have been at the shelter and available for adoption since December 17, 2011.  I’m not sure why my old family brought me here, but I’m really hoping to be safe and loved with a new family soon.  If you can be that family call Albuquerque Animal Services-Eastside at (505) 768-1975 and ask about animal ID #A1551792.

This precious pup is Baby.  She is a spayed 5 year old mixed lab who finds herself in a less than ideal situation.  Her current owners keep her tied in the backyard 24-7 as they don’t have the time to give her the attention she needs and deserves.  Her owners describe her as a sweet girl, a little shy, but loves kids.    She knows some basic manners and walks well on a leash; she would love to be taken for walks.  She does well with other dogs, but sometimes thinks cats are for chasing.   Baby wants to be part of a family.  If you can be a foster or that wonderful forever home that Baby deserves, please contact Jennifer at (505) 699-1855.

Libby, a chocolate lab mix, was abandoned by her owner and is waiting for a forever home while being fostered at the Doggie Dude Ranch. She is thought to be 6 or 7 years old and has been spayed. She will be up to date on inoculations and microchipped before going to an adoptive family. Libby is a friendly, outgoing girl that gets along well with other dogs. She CAN and HAS scaled a 6 ft. rock wall when she hears loud noises like thunder or firecrackers; she doesn’t leave the ranch but goes into the picnic yard. She has not, however, tried to climb out of her 6 ft. chain link fenced cabin area or any of of the other chain link fenced areas. To give yourself the joy of the companionship of this great dog, contact Frank at 575) 647-1416 or Doggie Dude Ranch, 575) 647-4471.

Mister Megan is mostly Labrador retriever, tan-gold in color with a gentle disposition. He is about 6 years old, neutered, micro-chipped, and up-to-date on vaccinations. He is timid at first, getting accustomed to new surroundings, but responds readily to attention and training. He came to the Humane Society of Southern NM adoption/foster program because the family who owned him was moving and unable to keep him. Mister Megan is a sweetheart, looking for a forever home with a loving family or individual. For more information, please call Frank Bryce, 575) 647-1416.

A Piece of My Heart

It came to me that every time I lose a dog, they take a piece of my heart with them. And every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are.

I am a dog

March 12, 2011
posted by colleen @ 6:18 pm

When God made me, he spelled his name backwards and called me Dog.

I am a dog. I am a living, breathing animal. I feel pain, joy, love, fear and pleasure.

I am not a thing. If I am hit – I will bruise, I will bleed, I will break. I will feel pain. I am not a thing.

I am a dog. I enjoy playtime, walk time, but more than anything, I enjoy time with my pack – my family – my people. I want nothing more than to be by the side of my human. I want to sleep where you sleep and walk where you walk. I am a dog and I feel love…I crave companionship.

I enjoy the touch of a kind hand and the softness of a good bed. I want to be inside of the home with my family, not stuck on the end of a chain or alone in a kennel or fenced yard for hours on end. I was born to be a companion, not to live a life of solitude.

I get too cold and I get too hot. I experience hunger and thirst. I am a living creature, not a thing.

When you leave, I want to go with you. If I stay behind, I will eagerly await your return. I long for the sound of your voice. I will do most anything to please you. I live to be your treasured companion.

I am a dog. My actions are not dictated by money, greed, or hatred. I do not know prejudice. I live in the moment and am ruled by love and loyalty.

Do not mistake me for a mindless object. I can feel and I can think. I can experience more than physical pain, I can feel fear and joy. I can feel love and confusion. I have emotions. I understand perhaps more than you do. I am able to comprehend the words you speak to me, but you are not always able to understand me.

I am a dog. I am not able to care for myself without your help. If you choose to tie me up and refuse to feed me, I will starve. If you abandon me on a rural road, I will experience fear and loneliness. I will search for you and wonder why I have been left behind. I am not a piece of property to be dumped and forgotten.

If you choose to leave me at a shelter, I will be frightened and bewildered. I will watch for your return with every footfall that approaches my kennel run.

I am a dog – a living, breathing creature. If you choose to take me home, please provide me with the things that I need to keep me healthy and happy.

Provide me with good food, clean water, warm shelter and your love. Do not abandon me. Do not kick me. Do not dump me when your life gets too busy. Make a commitment to me for the entirety of my life, or do not take me home in the first place.

If you desert me, I do not have the means to care for myself. I am at the mercy of the kindness of people – if I fall into the wrong hands, my life will be ruined.

I will experience pain, fear and loneliness. If I wind up in an animal shelter, I have only my eyes to implore someone to save me, and my tail to show you that I am a friend. If that is not good enough, I will die.

I am a dog. I want to give and receive love. I want to live. I am not a thing. I am not a piece of property. Please do not discard me. Please treat me with kindness, love and respect. I promise to repay you with unconditional love for as long as I live.

How Could You?

By Jim Willis, 2001

When I was a puppy, I entertained you with my antics and made you laugh. You called me your child, and despite a number of chewed shoes and a couple of murdered throw pillows, I became your best friend.  Whenever I was”bad,” you’d shake your finger at me and ask “How could you?” — but then you’d relent, and roll me over for a bellyrub. My housebreaking took a little longer than expected, because you were terribly busy, but we worked on that together.  I remember those nights of nuzzling you in bed and listening to your confidences and secret dreams, and I believed that life could not be any more perfect.  We went for long walks and runs in the park, car rides, stops for ice cream (I only got the cone because “ice cream is bad for dogs,” you said), and I took long naps in the sun waiting for you to come home at the end of the day.

Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career, and more time searching for a human mate.  I waited for you patiently, comforted you through heartbreaks and disappointments, never chided you about bad decisions, and romped with glee at your homecomings, and when you fell in love.  She, now your wife, is not a “dog person” — still I welcomed her into our home, tried to show her affection, and obeyed her.  I was happy because you were happy.  Then the human babies came along and I shared your excitement.  I was fascinated by their pinkness, how they smelled, and I wanted to mother  them, too.  Only she and you worried that I might hurt them, and I spent most of my time banished to another room, or to a dog crate.  Oh, how I wanted to love them, but I became a “prisoner of love.”

As they began to grow, I became their friend.  They clung to my fur and pulled themselves up on wobbly legs, poked fingers in my eyes, investigated my ears, and gave me kisses on my nose.  I loved everything about them and their touch — because your touch was now so infrequent — and I would have defended them with my life if need be.  I would sneak into their beds and listen to their worries and secret dreams, and together we waited for the sound of your car in the driveway.

There had been a time, when others asked you if you had a dog, that you produced a photo of me from your wallet and told them stories about me.  These past few years, you just answered “yes” and changed the subject.  I had gone from being “your dog” to “just a dog,” and you resented every expenditure on my behalf.  Now, you have a new career opportunity in another city, and you and they will be moving to an apartment that does not allow pets.  You’ve made the right decision  for your “family,” but there was a time when I was your only family.

I was excited about the car ride until we arrived at the animal shelter.  It smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of hopelessness.  You filled out the paperwork and said “I know you will find a good home for her.”  They shrugged and gave you a pained look.  They understand the realities facing a middle-aged dog, even one with “papers.”   You had to pry your son’s fingers loose from my collar as he screamed “No, Daddy!  Please don’t let them take my dog!”  And I worried for him, and what  lessons you had just taught him about friendship and loyalty,  about love and responsibility, and about respect for all life.  You gave me a good-bye pat on the head, avoided my eyes, and politely refused to take my collar and leash with you.  You had a deadline to meet and now I have one, too.  After you left, the two nice ladies said you probably knew about your upcoming move months ago and made no attempt to find me another good home.  They shook their heads and asked “How could you?”  They are as attentive to us here in the shelter as their busy  schedules  allow.  They feed us, of course, but I lost my appetite days ago.  At first, whenever anyone passed my pen, I rushed to the front, hoping it was you that you had changed your mind — that this was all a bad dream … or I hoped it would at least be someone who cared, anyone who might save me. When I realized I could not compete with the frolicking for attention of happy puppies, oblivious to their own fate, I retreated to a far corner and waited.

I heard her footsteps as she came for me at the end of the day, and I padded along the aisle after her to a separate room.  A blissfully quiet room. She placed me on the table and rubbed my ears, and told me not to worry.     My heart pounded in anticipation of what was to come, but there was also a sense of relief.  The prisoner of love had run out of days.  As is my nature, I was more concerned about her.  The burden which she bears weighs heavily on her, and I know that, the same way I knew your every mood.  She gently placed a  turniquet around my foreleg as a tear ran down her cheek.  I licked her hand in the same way I used to comfort you so many years ago.  She expertly slid the hypodermic needle into my vein.  As I felt the sting and the cool liquid coursing through my body, I lay down sleepily, looked into her kind eyes and murmured “How could you?”

Perhaps because she understood my dogspeak, she said “I’m so sorry.” She hugged me, and  hurriedly explained it was her job to make sure I went to a better place, where I wouldn’t be ignored or abused or abandoned, or have to fend for myself — a place of love and light so very different from this earthly place.  And with my last bit of energy, I tried to convey to her with a thump of my tail that my “How could you?” was not directed at her.  It was you, My Beloved Master, I was thinking of.  I will  think of you and wait for you forever.  May everyone in your life continue to show you so much loyalty.

The End

A note from the author:
If “How Could You?” brought tears to your eyes as you read it, as it did to mine as I wrote it, it is because it is the composite story of the millions of formerly owned pets who die each year in American and  Canadian animal shelters.  Anyone is welcome to distribute the essay for a noncommercial purpose, as long as it is properly attributed with the copyright notice.

Please use it to help educate, on your websites, in newsletters, on animal shelter and vet office bulletin boards.  Tell the public that the decision to add a pet to the family is an important one for life, that animals deserve our love and sensible care, that finding another appropriate home for your animal is your responsibility and any local humane society or animal welfare league can offer you good advice, and that all life is precious.  Please do your part to stop the killing, and encourage all spay & neuter campaigns in order to prevent unwanted animals.

“I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter…the cast-offs of human society. I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread, sadness and betrayal. And I was angry. “God,” I said, “this is terrible! Why don’t You do something?” God was silent for a moment and then He spoke softly. “I have done something,” He replied. “I created YOU.” ~ Jim Willis ~

I Rescued a Human Today

February 14, 2010
posted by colleen @ 6:39 pm

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels.  I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.

I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.
